Step 1: The Foundation - Humble Clay
Every great piece begins with the right foundation. We select high-quality stoneware clay, known for its incredible durability and beautifully earthy character. This humble, malleable earth is the very soul of the finished plate, promising both strength and a connection to the natural world.
Step 2: Giving Form - From Wheel to Plate
In the hands of a skilled artisan, the clay begins to take shape. Whether formed on a wheel or in a press, it is carefully shaped, smoothed, and refined into a perfect canvas—a clean, minimalist plate waiting for its personality to be revealed. This is where the final silhouette is born, from the gentle curve of a coupe plate to the defined edge of a classic rim.
Step 3: The First Fire - A Test of Strength
Once completely dry, the fragile "greenware" plate heads to the kiln for its first firing, known as the bisque fire. This low-temperature firing transforms the clay into a hardened, porous ceramic state. It’s no longer clay, but not yet its final form. This crucial step prepares it to perfectly absorb the glaze.

Step 5: Trial by Fire - The Final Transformation
The glazed plate returns to the kiln for a final, high-temperature firing. This is where the alchemy happens. The intense heat melts the glaze, turning it into a beautiful, glassy, and durable surface that is completely food-safe. This is also the moment of truth, when the glazes mature and their final, often unpredictable, colours and patterns are revealed. Opening the kiln after it has cooled is always a moment of suspense and excitement.
